Valley Academy

The Valley Academy is a Smaller Learning Community within Valley High School designed to meet the needs of academically high achieving students. Valley Academy students are expected to take responsibility for their educational success by:

  • Maintaining an acceptable GPA
  • Maintaining good attendance each year
  • Participating in school activities
  • Completing at least two community service projects each year

In return, Academy students have the opportunity to participate in many programs designed to foster success, such as tutoring, test preparation classes, and college searches.

Students applying to the Valley Academy and living outside the Valley attendance area must apply for and receive a transfer through APS City Center. Valley Academy students are given "first priority" for academic events on Valley's campus. Some examples are:

  1. Placement in the Honors/AP courses
  2. First to sign-up for academic tests (ACT, SAT, PSAT)
  3. Tutoring by UNM students
  4. Job Shadowing/Mentorship

The requirements for acceptance are:

  1. Completed application
  2. One teacher recommendation (Math, Science, Social Studies, or English teacher)
  3. Mid-School transcript (3.0 or higher GPA)

Once in the Academy, the requirements are:

  1. Maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA
  2. Enroll in an Honors or Advanced Placement Valley course
  3. Complete 20 hours of community service
  4. Be a "member in good standing" in a Valley club or organization
